Abstract A method of preforming moldable compositions of fibrous materials and a binder in which the preform has portions along its width having different thicknesses corresponding to different thicknesses of the final molded product. Initially the composition is formed into a mat which has a thickness at least equal to the thickest portion of the preform, and then excess material is removed from across the width of the mat by scalping rolls to develop the contoured preform having different thicknesses. Each section of the mat having a different thickness is weighed separately to insure proper density of that section of the mat. Following the weighing step, the mat is again shaped into the contoured preform and placed into a mold for a subsequent heating and pressing operation.
In a method of preforming a mixture of comminuted fibrous material and a binder for forming a mat of substantially uniform density and having portions of different thicknesses over the transverse width of said mat, said method comprising the steps of: a. transporting the mixture in loose condition on a first surface moving in a direction substantially normal to said transverse width to form a first layer of said mixture on said first moving surface; b. preshaping said first layer while on said first moving surface so as to produce laterally adjacent portions each having a different thickness respectively in pro-portion to that of a corresponding portion of different thickness of the mat; c. dividing said preshaped first layer in a plurality of adjacent portions each corresponding to a respective portion of different thickness of said mat, and mechanically weighing each divided portion according to the desired weight of the corresponding portion of the mat; d. depositing the weighed portions laterally adjacent to each other onto a second surface moving in a second direction also substantially normal to said transverse width so as to form a second layer on said second moving surface; and e. mechanically equalizing portions of said second layer while transporting it on said second moving surface so as to impart to each portion of said second layer a thickness proportional to thE thickness of the re-spective portion of the mat.
