Abstract

Abstract Modified ethylene/vinyl chloride interpolymers useful as pigment binders of adhesives in pigment coating compositions for paper, paperboard and similar materials, said modified interpolymer being used alone or in combination with paper coating starch of protein material. The modified ethylene/vinyl chloride interpolymer comprises (1) an interpolymer of ethylene, vinyl chloride and optionally one other polar monomer and (2) a salt of an interpolymer of an alpha, beta-unsaturated polycarboxylic acid and a member selected from the group consisting of alpha olefins, alkyl vinyl ethers and vinyl alkanoates.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 40 words
A composition as described in claim 1 wherein the salt of an interpolymer of an alpha-beta unsaturated polycarboxylic acid is present in amounts of from about 1 to about 20 percent based on the weight of the ethylene/vinyl chloride interpolymers.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 55 words
A composition as described in claim 1 wherein component (1) is a terpolymer containing from about 15 to 70 percent ethylene, from about 30 to 85 percent vinyl chloride and from about 0.1 to 10 percent acrylamide, and component (2) is a salt of an interpolymer of an alpha,beta-unsaturated polybasic carboxylic acid and an alpha-olefin.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
A composition of claim 1 wherein component (2) is an alkali metal salt of an interpolymer of maleic anhydride and styrene.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
A composition of claim 1 wherein component (2) is an ammonium hydroxide neutralized salt of an interpolymer of maleic anhydride and styrene.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 34 words
A composition of matter as described in claim 1 wherein the ethylene/vinyl chloride/acrylamide terpolymer is treated with alkaline material chemically equivalent to up to about 100 percent of the amide content of the interpolymer.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 45 words
A composition of matter as described in claim 1 wherein the polar monomer content of said interpolymer is a mixture of a major amount of acrylamide and a minor amount, under 2 percent of the total interpolymer weight, of an alkali metal acrylate or methacrylate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 55 words
A composition of matter as described in claim 7 wherein the interpolymer is a quaternary polymer containing from about 15 to 70 percent ethylene, from about 30 to about 85 percent vinyl chloride, from about 1 percent to about 5 percent of acrylamide, and from about 0.1 to 2 percent of sodium acrylate or methacrylate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 31 words
A composition of matter as described in claim 1 wherein the component (1) is an ethylene/vinyl chloride copolymer containing from about 55 to about 95percent by weight of polymerized vinyl chloride.
