In a web inspection system having a. means for sweeping a beam of radiation back and forth across a surface, b. photodetector means, and c. optics for directing the radiation which emanates from said surface to said photodetector means, the improvement wherein said optics includes a cylindrical lens for receiving the radiation emanating from said surface, said cylindrical lens having a longitudinal axis and having a mask positioned lengthwise with respect to said lens substantially parallel to the lOngitudinal axis so that said mask lies in the path of said beam in the absence of said surface.
