Abstract A HEAT-RESISTANT PHENOLIC RESIN COMPOSITION COMPRISING A PHENOLALDEHYDE RESOLE AND A BORON CONTAINING COMPOUND FORMED BY REACTING BORIC ACID OR BORIC OXIDE WITH GLYOXAL, GLYOXAL TRIMER, SUBSTITUTED GLYOXAL AND GLYOXAL DERIVATIVES. THESE REACTION PRODUCTS PRODUCE AN "ACID LIKE" CURE OF THE RESIN AS THEY ARE WEAK ACIDS IN THE PRESENCE OF THE WATER IN THE PHENOLEFOMALDEHYDE RESOLE. THE RESIN MAY BE MADE INTO COATINGS, CASTINGS OR, BY THE ADDITION OF A SURFACANT AND A BLOWING AGENT, FOAMS MAY BE PRODUCED.
