Abstract
Abstract A method for the selective methanation of a gaseous mixture containing hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide with the carbon monoxide being present in an amount up to about 1 percent, which contemplates the contacting of said gaseous mixture with a Raney-type nickel catalyst containing from about 30-35 percent nickel, 5-18 percent aluminum, and balance Al2O3.3H2O; at elevated temperatures.

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
71 words
passing said gaseous mixture into contact with a supported or unsupported Raney nickel catalyst containing from about 30-35 percent nickel, 5-18 percent aluminum, and the balance A12 O3 . 3H2O to selectively methanate said CO in the presence of said CO2 by reaction with said H2, without conversion of substantial amounts of CO2 to methane or CO, thereby to reduce the CO content of said gas to below about 100 ppm.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
23 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein said nickel catalyst is an unsupported catalyst, being a consolidated structure prepared by the steps of:
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
10 words
treating said immobilized particles with water to generate hydrogen gas,
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
18 words
removing generated hydrogen gas to produce a consolidated structure of particles bonded together by hydrated aluminum oxide, and
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
13 words
A method according to claim 2 wherein said temperature is about 200*-225* C.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
24 words
A method according to claim 2 wherein said aluminum-nickel alloy contains about 30-35 percent by weight nickel and about 70-65 percent by weight aluminum.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim

leaching said consolidated structure with alkali hydroxide to produce said catalyst.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
19 words
A method according to claim 2 wherein said alloy particles are coated on a support and maintained immobilized thereon.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
28 words
A method according to claim 2 wherein the space velocity of said gaseous mixture is between about 9,000 to 36,000 SCF per cubic foot of catalyst per hour.
