Abstract

Abstract Recording electrodes of a coincidence voltage type electrographic recorder are divided into arrays. Like-numbered electrodes of different arrays are connected together. Complementary electrodes are disposed adjacent to the arrays. A latent image is formed at a selected recording electrode when suitable voltage is applied to that electrode, and in coincidence therewith, suitable voltage is applied to one or more complementary electrodes adjacent to the array containing the selected recording electrode. Uniform potential is obtained at the conductive layer along the full length of the array at which recording is taking place by having the complementary electrodes longer than the array and extending beyond both ends of the array. For this purpose, the complimentary electrodes may be longer than the array, or they may have a shorter length and be selectively connected in groups to act as long electrodes.

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 170 words
An electrographic recording system for recording on a record medium having a charge retentive surface and a conductive layer, said system comprising: an array of recording electrodes, with each recording electrode mounted with an area thereof in close proximity to the exposed surface of said charge retentive layer; complementary electrode means mounted adjacent to said array with an area of said means in cooperative relationship with said record medium, said means extending beyond both ends of said array; circuit means for applying a first voltage of one polarity to any selected recording electrode of said array; circuit means for applying a second voltage of opposite polarity to said complementary electrode means in coincidence with said first voltage whereby the potential of said conductive layer is changed in coincidence with said first voltage; said complementary electrode means extending sufficiently far beyond the ends of said array so that the potential change developed at the conductive layer is substantially uniform at all portions thereof which face said areas of said recording electrodes.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 170 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 41 words
A recording system as described in claim 1 wherein the recorDing electrodes are disposed in a row, and the complementary electrode means comprise a pair of electrodes electrically connected together and disposed on opposite sides of the row of recording electrodes.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 48 words
A recording system as described in claim 1 wherein the recording electrodes are disposed in a plurality of closely spaced, parallel rows, and the complementary electrode means comprise a pair of electrodes electrically connected together and disposed on opposite sides of the rows of electrodes and parallel thereto.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
A recording system as described in claim 1 wherein the complementary electrode means comprise a plurality of electrodes disposed end to end, and electrically connected together.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
A recording system as described in claim 1 wherein the complementary electrode means comprise a single electrode extending beyond the limits of said array as described in claim
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 21 words
A recording system as described in claim 1 wherein said complementary electrode means are approximately twice as long as said array.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 66 words
An electrographic recording system as described in claim 1 in which said array is one of a plurality of arrays, each having complementary electrode means mounted adjacent thereto as described, and said circuit means for applying said second voltage are adapted to apply said voltage to any selected complementary electrode means, and there are circuit means interconnecting like-numbered recording electrodes of different ones of said arrays.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 38 words
A recording system as described in claim 1 wherein the complementary electrode means are mounted adjacent to the charge retentive surface of the record medium and thereby are capacitively coupled to the conductive layer of the record medium.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 16 words
A recording system as described in claim 8 wherein the second voltage is a voltage pulse.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 66 words
An electrographic recording system as described in claim 8 in which said array is one of a plurality of arrays, each having complementary electrode means mounted adjacent thereto as described, and said circuit means for applying said second voltage are adapted to apply said voltage to any selected complementary electrode means, and there are circuit means interconnecting like-numbered recording electrodes of different ones of said arrays.
