Abstract 2-AMINO-2-HALOHYDROCARBYL-1,3-PROPANEDIOLS ARE PREPARED BY REACTING TRIS(HYDROXYHYDROCARBYL)METHYLAMINE WITH AN ALDEHYDE TO FORM A BICYCLO REACTION PRODUCT, HALOGENATING SAID REACTION PRODUCT AND HYDROLYZING THE PRODUCT OF THE HALOGENATION REACTION TO FORM THE CORRESPONDING AMINO- AND HALO-SUBSTITUTED ALKANEDIOLS. THE SUBSTITUTED ALKANEDIOLS OF THE INVENTION ARE USEFUL AS STARTING COMPOUNDS FOR THE PREPARATION OF 2-AMINO-2-MERCAPTOALKYL-1,3-PROPANEDIOLS WHICH ARE CMPOUNDS HAVING KNOWN ANTIRADIATION ACTIVITY.
