Abstract
Abstract AN ION EXCHANGE MEMBRANE DIVIDES AN ELECTROLYTIC CELL INTO SEPARATE ANOLYTE AND CATHOLYTE COMPARTMENTS. SPACER STRIPS BETWEEN THE MEMBRANE AND CATHODE DEFINE SMOOTH-WALLED CATHOLYTE PASSAGES BETWEEN THE MEMBRANE AND CATHODE. THE SPACER STRIPS ARE PARALLEL TO CATHOLYTE FLOW. ANOLYTE PRESSURE IS SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN CATHOLYTE PRESSURE. THE DIMENSIONS OF THE MEMBRANE FRAME ARE CHOSEN TO SEAL AGAINST THE ANODE AND CATHODE BLOCKS WITHOUT DISTORING THE ELECTRODES.
