Abstract
Abstract A method of making flakes of roast and ground coffee wherein said flakes have a flake bulk density of from 0.38 grams/cc to 0.50 grams/cc, a flake thickness of from 0.008 inches to 0.025 inches and a flake moisture content of from 2.5 to 7.0 percent. The method comprises passing roast and ground coffee having a moisture content of from 2.5 to 7.0 percent through a roll mill having a roll diameter of from 6.0 inches to 30.0 inches, at a roll pressure of from 1,500 lbs./inch of nip to 5,000 lbs./inch of nip, at a roll surface temperature of from 50* F. to 200* F. and at a roll peripheral surface speed of from 100 ft./min. to 1,500 ft./min.
