Abstract

Abstract A process for treating ilmenite to obtain a beneficiated product having a relatively high titanium dioxide content. Particulate ilmenite is first heated in the presence of a reducing agent to reduce the iron compounds in the ilmenite to ferrous oxide and/or metallic iron. The resulting product is then leached with a dilute inorganic acid to solubilize the reduced iron values. The liquor produced during leaching is then filtered from the unsolubilized residue, and the latter is subjected to a combination of process steps. Such steps include magnetic separation to remove essentially all of the iron valves remaining in the residue, and electrical separation to remove essentially all of the silicon values therein. Also, the residue is roasted at a relatively high temperature to drive off the water of crystallization which associates therewith during leaching. The final product contains up to 98 percent titanium dioxide by weight.
