Abstract

Abstract An apparatus for continuous manufacture of helically corrugated plastic pipe from extruded tubing utilizing differential pressure. Thermoplastic material is extruded in a molten state in the form of a tube and the tube is passed over a helically corrugated surface of either an internal mandrel or an external mandrel. A vacuum is supplied between the surface of the cylindrical body and the inside surface of the tube to conform the tube to the surface of the body. A pressure differential is maintained inside the formed pipe, a vacuum being used with the internal mandrel and a pressure with the external mandrel. The cylindrical body is rotated to advance the extruded tube formed thereabout and a cooling fluid is circulated through the cylindrical body to cool the tube as it it formed against the body.
