Abstract

Abstract The external surfaces of crystalline aluminosilicates are treated with hydrocarbyl halosilanes or their condensation products with ammonia, primary amines, secondary amines or alcohols to modify the surface adsorptive properties of the aluminosilicates. In separation processes employing crystalline aluminosilicates wherein the surface adsorbed materials must be removed in a purging operation before the initially adsorbed materials are recovered, silanizing the external surface of the aluminosilicates greatly reduces the time or severity of the purging operation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 26 words
A process according to claim 1 where the radicals present on the surface of the molecular sieve have a formula selected from the group consisting of:
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 193 words
A process for separating C7-C22 straight chain hydrocarbons or a fraction thereof from a mixture of said straight chain hydrocarbons and C7-C22 non-straight chain hydrocarbons which comprises a. contacting said mixture with a silanized crystalline metal aluminosilicate molecular sieve having a nominal uniform pore diameter of 5 A., said silanized sieve being characterized by the presence on its surface of radicals having the formula: where X is R3, H or OR10 and where R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and are C1-C10 hydrocarbyl radicals and R10 is a C1-C3 alkyl radical, so that C7-C22 straight chain hydrocarbons are adsorbed within the sieve cages of the silanized molecular sieve, b. continuing said contact until the sieve cage capacity of said silanized molecular sieve for straight chain hydrocarbons is at least 60 percent satisfied and a substantial amount of the C7-C22 hydrocarbons of said mixture is surface adsorbed, c. purging said silanized molecular sieve to remove surface-adsorbed hydrocarbons therefrom and, d. subjecting said silanized molecular sieve containing the straight chain hydrocarbons within the sieve cages thereof to a desorbing step to remove 70 to 90 weight percent of the straight chain hydrocarbons.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
A process according to claim 3 where the radicals present on the surface of the molecular sieve have a formula selected from the group consisting of:
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 53 words
A process according to claim 3 where steps (c) and (d) comprise purging the sieve and desorbing the straight chain hydrocarbons by contacting the silanized molecular sieve with a straight chain hydrocarbon or a mixture thereof, having about one to three carbon atoms less than the lightest hydrocarbon component of the feed mixture.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 52 words
A process according to claim 3 where steps (c) and (d) comprise purging the sieve and desorbing the straight chain hydrocarbons by contacting the silanized molecular sieve with a straight chain hydrocarbon or mixture thereof having about one to eight carbon atoms more than the heaviest hydrocarbon component of the feed mixture.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 203 words
A process for separating C7-C22 straight chain hydrocarbons or a fraction thereof from a mixture of said straight chain hydrocarbons and C7-C22 non-straight chain hydrocarbons which comprises: a. contacting said mixture with a silanized crystalline metal aluminosilicate molecular sieve having a nominal uniform pore diameter of 5 A., so that C7-C22 straight chain hydrocarbons are adsorbed within the sieve cages of the silanized molecular sieve, said molecular sieve having been prepared by a process which comprises contacting a crystalline metal aluminosilicate molecular sieve having nominal pore openings of 5 A. with a silanizing agent selected from the group consisting of trimethylchlorosilane and hexamethyldisilazane in an amount between 0.01 to 10 pounds of silanizing agent per thousand pounds of said molecular sieve, b. continuing said contact until the sieve cage capacity of said silanized molecular sieve for straight chain hydrocarbons is at least 60 percent satisfied and a substantial amount of the C7-C22 hydrocarbons of said mixture is surface adsorbed, c. purging said silanized molecular sieve to remove surface-adsorbed hydrocarbons therefrom and, d. subjecting said silanized molecular sieve containing the straight chain hydrocarbons within the sieve cages thereof to a desorbing step to remove 70 to 90 weight percent of the straight chain hydrocarbons.
