Abstract
Abstract Tire construction featuring as the principal reinforcement a combination of chopped bundles or cords, each composed of an assembled plurality of glass filaments held together, and chopped discrete glass filaments distributed throughout the rubbery matrix generally uniformly, preferably at a level of about 2 to about 35 parts of glass per 100 parts of rubber and preferably with the bundles exceeding the discrete filaments in amount on a weight basis.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
88 words
In a tire construction including means for engagement with a vehicle rim, a carcass connecting said means and extending therebetween in toroidal configuration, and a ground-contacting tread member carried by said carcass at the crown thereof, the improvement wherein said tread member includes substantially randomly distributed therethrough an amount of relatively short individual, discrete glass filaments and a somewhat greater amount of somewhat longer chopped cord bundles, said cord bundles each consisting essentially of an assembled plurality of individual filaments held in assembled juxtaposition by an elastomeric impregnant.

Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
54 words
The tire construction as claimed in claim 1, wherein said fibers and bundles are securely adhered to the portion of the tread body surrounding them whereby said fibers and bundles do not readily separate from said tread body as tire wear occurs, thereby increasing the traction between the tread surface and the ground surface.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
A tire as claimed in claim 2, wherein the total glass measures from about 2 to about 20 parts per hundred of rubber.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
20 words
A tire as claimed in claim 3, wherein an appreciable proportion of said fibers are oriented radially of said tire.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim

In a tire construction including means for engagement with a vehicle rim, a carcass connecting said means and extending therebetween in toroidal configuration, and a ground-contacting tread member carried by said carcass at the crown thereof, the improvement wherein said tread member includes substantially randomly distributed therethrough an amount of individual, discrete glass filaments measuring up to about one-fourth inch in length and a somewhat greater amount of chopped cord bundles measuring up to about 3 inches in length, said cord bundles each consisting essentially of an assembled plurality of individual filaments held in assembled juxtaposition by an elastomeric impregnant.
