In an absorption unit for purifying a stream of gas comprising a housing having a horizontal passageway for the gas, at least one absorption medium positioned within the passageway, and means for distributing an absorption liquid on the absorption medium, the improvement wherein the absorption medium is a flat plate positioned at an angle of about 45* with respect to the horizongal gas stream, and having a plurality of slit-like apertures formed in the absorption medium arranged in a herringbone pattern.
