Abstract A FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION COLUMN OPERATING AS A GASOLINE SPLITTER IS CONTROLLED BY MEASURING THE OCTANE NUMBER OF THE COLUMN OVERHEAD FRACTION AND ADJUSTING THE REFLUX TO THE COLUMN IN RESPONSE TO THE OCTANE NUMBER. THE OCTANE MEASUREMENT IS EFFECTED BY AN ANALYZER COMPRISING A STABILIZED COOL FLAME GENERATOR WITH SERVO-POSITIONED FLAME FRONT WHICH PROVIDES A REAL TIME OUTPUT SIGNAL INDICATIVE OF SAMPLE OCTANE NUMBER.
