Abstract
Abstract Chemical equilibrium and optimum operation in a sealed-off CO2 gas laser is maintained by replenishing the CO2 lost by dissociation into CO and O2 either directly by providing a source and getter arrangement inside the laser tube or by replenishing the O2 lost by reaction with oxygen gettering surfaces in the laser cavity by placing an oxygen yielding compound in the laser cavity which will react with the CO to product CO2.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim
79 words
In combination: a sealed-off carbon dioxide gas laser containing carbon dioxide gas in a discharge tube, the carbon dioxide decomposing to form carbon monoxide and oxygen; self-contained means as an integral portion of said laser comprising a solid-state source of carbon dioxide for continually replenishing the carbon dioxide lost by dissociation; a carbon monoxide getter; and an oxygen getter, said getters being in communication with the discharge tube for absorbing said carbon monoxide and oxygen lost by the dissociation.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
28 words
The combination as stated in claim 2, wherein: said self-contained means is a solid-state compound selected from the group consisting oF PbCO3, Ag2CO3, BaCO3, CuCO3, CaCO3 and FeCO3.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
49 words
The combination as stated in claim 2, including: means for sensing the pressure in said discharge tube; a passageway connecting said source and said discharge tube; and valve means positioned in said passageway and responsive to the pressure sensing means for controlling the flow of CO2 from said source.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
39 words
The combination as stated in claim 4, wherein: the valve means is operative to meter in predetermined amount of CO2 from said source into said discharge tube upon a change of pressure of the gas in said discharge tube.
