Abstract

Abstract The specification discloses a tank for inflammable liquids, such as a gasoline tank for a motor vehicle, having filler tube including an improved construction of its upper end receiving the sealing cap. The disclosed construction provides a tight sealing joint between the tube and the cap and eliminates some serious disadvantages of the prior construction. The filler tube end is made in two pieces in order to eliminate the difficulties of producing the desired construction by stamping due to substantial length of the tube. At the same time the disclosed construction eliminates a passage in the juncture of the two pieces leading from the inside of the sealed space within the tube to the outside thereof and some other disadvantages known to have created serious difficulties and having safety implications. The construction possesses a number of additional advantages by virtue of having the cam plate thereof disposed on the outside of the filler tube sealing edge.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 196 words
In a gasoline tank for a motor vehicle, a filler tube of a substantial length having a lower end and an upper end, with the lower end being attached to the tank and the upper end adapted to receive a sealing cap having a gasket, said upper end including means to hold the sealing cap at said end and means to seal the cap thereat, the sealing means comprising a continuous rounded sealing edge formed by bending the originally straight edge of the tube upon itself, and the cap holding means comprising a separately made piece having cam edges formed thereon for engagement by complimentary members of the sealing cap to hold said cap and the gasket thereof against said sealing edge, said piece being secured directly to the upper end of the filler tube on the outside thereof and adjacent said sealing edge and forming a cam plate disposed on the outside of the filler tube, with the rounded sealing edge being bent inwardly of the filler tube and thus forming a hook adapted to engage the nozzle of a gasoline hose and retain it in place in the filler tube when filling the tank.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 196 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 114 words
In a receptacle for flammable liquid, said receptacle having a filler tube with two ends, one of said ends being attached to the receptacle and the other end being free and adapted to receive a sealing cap, a smooth continuous sealing edge provided on the free end of said tube to receive the sealing cap thereat, and a cam plate secured to said free end of the tube outside thereof to engage said sealing cap and to hold the same against said sealing edge, the joint between said plate and said tube being disposed completely outside of the space sealed by said cap, and being continuous around the entire periphery of said filler tube.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
The construction defined in claim 2, the sealing edge being integrally formed on the free end of said tube to receive the sealing cap thereat.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The construction defined in claim 2, the sealing edge being formed by bending inwardly the originally straight edges of the free end of the tube.
