Abstract

Abstract A gas sample dispersed in a first carrier gas such as hydrogen is enriched by introducing into the dispersion at a controlled flow rate a mixture of a second carrier gas such as helium diluted with first carrier gas and passing the dispersion through a gas transfer device such as a heated palladium tube which is selectively permeable to the first carrier gas.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 28 words
A method according to claim 1 in which the flow rate of helium carrier gas is maintained constant and the detector is sensitive to changes in flow rate.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method according to claim 1 in which the flow rate of helium carrier gas into the effluent is less than the flow rate of hydrogen gas introduced into the effluent.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method according to claim 3 in which the flow rate of helium carrier gas is less than the flow rate of the material.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method according to claim 4 in which the flow rate of helium carrier gas is less than 1 ml. per minute.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 32 words
A method according to claim 1 in which the transfer device comprises a tube of palladium heated to a temperature at which the walls of the tube are selectively permeable to hydrogen.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method according to claim 6 in which the tube comprises a palladium-silver alloy heated to a temperature of 150* to 600* C.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method according to claim 6 further including the step of applying an oxygen-containing atmosphere to the outside surface of the tube.
