Abstract
Abstract The present invention relates to a dual electrolyte system utilizing a diaphragm electrolytic cell. The anolyte and catholyte, containing aqueous HCl and a polyvalent reducible metal chloride, are processed and recycled separately. The system of the present invention produces high-purity C12 at higher than conventional current efficiencies.

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim
23 words
The process of claim 1 including the additional step of operating the cell so that essentially no fluid flow occurs across the diaphragm.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
13 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the polyvalent metal chloride is copper chloride.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
30 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the compositions of catholyte and anolyte comprise from about 0.5 to about 2 M CuCl2 and from about 3 to about 8 M HC1.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
