Abstract

Abstract A harvesting machine for hay or the like which comprises a frame and a harvester subframe pivotally mounted on the frame and a drive input coaxial with the axis of pivot. The drive input is through an overrunning clutch to a sprocket to drive a chain which drives an upper crushing roller through an overrunning clutch and then driving a countershaft drive for the reel. The chain returns back-wrapped on a drive element of the lower roller and then extends to its initial run under the input drive sprocket. The input drive also drives through a pulley coaxial with the pivot axis a belt which drives a pulley on the drive train of a mower. The chain is held tight when the rollers are separated and closed by a tightener which is mounted with the movable roller on a common support so that as the distance from the input to the roller increases or decreases the chain is proportionately straightened or bowed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 206 words
An agricultural machine comprising a wheel-supported main frame, a header comprising a subframe pivotally supported on the main frame on a transverse horizontal axis for vertical floating movement to follow terrain conditions and for vertical swinging movement between a raised transport position and lowered operating positions, a header having a subframe pivotally mounted to the main frame on a transverse generally horizontal axis and comprising an upper conditioning roller and a lower conditioning roller and means mounting the lower roller fixedly on the subframe and means movably mounting the upper roller from the subframe for vertical movement with respect to the lower roller, means for transferring power from an associated power source to said rollers compriSing a power transfer assembly rotatably mounted on said axis from the main frame whereby power flow to the rollers is not affected by movements of the header, each roller including rotatable driving means, an endless chain trained about said transfer assembly and roller drive means and having a slack run and a tight run, and idler tightener means mounted on said means movably mounting the upper roller for biasing said chain into driving engagement and engaged with the chain along a length thereof between said assembly and said upper roller.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 206 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 58 words
The invention according to claim 1 and said header comprising a rotatable reel, and means including a countershaft drive train assembly mounted on the header and including a sprocket having a sector thereof extending between said roller drive means, and said chain trained about said sprocket, and means providing a drive from said countershaft assembly to said reel.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
The invention according to claim 2 and said header comprising a mower and means providing a drive from said drive transfer assembly directly to said mower.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 35 words
The invention according to claim 1 and said main frame comprising a draft frame, and means on the draft frame and main frame for transferring power from a power takeoff to said power transfer assembly.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 50 words
The invention according to claim 1 and said rotatable drive means of the upper roller comprising overrunning clutch means permitting said upper roller to roll freely upon discontinuation of drive thereto so as not to load said slack-run length of chain between said power transfer assembly and said upper roller.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
The invention according to claim 5 and said power transfer assembly comprising overrunning clutch means to prevent loading of said transfer assembly by driving force from said lower roller to said chain.
