Abstract
Abstract Polytetrafluoroethylene in aqueous dispersion is mixed with a finely divided electrochemically active rechargeable electrode material, such as zinc, zinc oxide, cadmium, cadmium oxide, nickel oxide, copper, copper oxide, silver, silver oxide, mercuric oxide, etc. The dispersion is broken by drying, freezing, solvent extraction, etc. Where zinc particles form the active material it may be desirable to amalgamate the zinc with mercury.

Process according to claim 1, said step of incorporating the dispersion into the active material comprising impregnating the dispersion at least once into a formed electrode wherein said finely divided active rechargeable material has been deposited in a nonpasted manner on the current collector, said step of breaking the dispersion being performed subsequent to at least one of said impregnations.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
125 words
A process of forming a pasted rechargeable electrode comprising forming a paste of a finely divided rechargeable active electrode material intimately mixed with an aqueous dispersion comprised of a linear fluorocarbon polymer in an aqueous carrier and a surfactant, irreversibly breading the dispersion by treating said carrier at a temperature not exceeding about 200* F and below the sintering temperature of the linear fluorocarbon polymer in such manner that The fluorocarbon polymer becomes coagulated into a porous network defining a nonsintered fibrous interconnecting matrix intimately associated with and binding the particulate active material into a cohesive body in which the rechargeable active electrode material remains highly accessible to gas and liquid contact, and applying the paste to a current collector to form a pasted electrode.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
155 words
A process of forming a pasted zinc electrode comprising amalgamating finely divided zinc particles with a minor amount of mercury, forming a paste by intimately mixing the amalgamated zinc particles with an aqueous dispersion comprised of a fibrous linear fluorocarbon polymer minutely distributed with an aqueous carrier, irreversibly breaking the dispersion by treating said aqueous carrier at a temperature not exceeding the boiling point of the carrier and below the sintering temperature of the linear fluorocarbon polymer in such manner that the fluorocarbon polymer becomes precipitated from the dispersion to form a porous network defining a nonsintered fibrous interconnected matrix intimately associated with and binding the amalgamated zinc particles into a cohesive body in which the amalgamated zinc particles remain highly accessible to gas and liquid contact, said step of breaking the dispersion comprising removing the carrier from contact with the paste, and spreading the paste on a current collector to form a pasted electrode.
