Abstract A substrate having a conductive layer attached to one surface, with the exposed portions of the conductive layer coated with a photoresist material, is incrementally moved past a linear array of lamps disposed laterally to the path of the substrate for selectively illuminating adjacent areas across the conductive layer to burn in the illuminated photoresist material. The energization of the lamps is controlled by a similar array of sensors and a light source disposed laterally to the path of a transparency which is moving at the same incremental speed as the substrate. This transparency has a grid or grating of squares drawn thereon having the same outline as the conductive layer and the same number of rows of squares in the grid as there are lamps or sensors. The grid squares corresponding to areas of the conductive layer to be retained are made opaque to a suitable degree and the sensing of an opaque square by a sensor energizes the corresponding lamp to burn in the desired portion of the photoresist material.

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim
35 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said template comprises a grid of rectangles, said grid has an outline similar to the outline of said coating material sheet, and said pattern is drawn within said grid.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
28 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said rectangles are arranged in parallel rows and the number of said rows is the same as the number of said lamps.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
85 words
The apparatus of claim 4 characterized further by the provision of means for incrementally moving said template in synchronism with the movement of said substrate and relative to said sensing means, and wherein said sensing means comprises a linear array of sensors arranged across said template and its path of movement, each sensor arranged to sense in succession the areas of a row of said rectangles, and means confining the area sensed by any sensor at one time to the area of a single rectangle.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
76 words
The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said controlling means further comprises means for radiating energy to the patterned surface of linearly adjacent areas of said template containing portions of said pattern, said energy is radiated in a path leading to said sensors, said patterned surfaces are of such character that at least a portion of said energy does not reach said sensors, and said sensors are responsive to less than the total quantity of said energy.
