Abstract A PROCESS FOR PRODUCING SHAPABLE POLYMERIC COMPOSITIONS HAVING IMPROVED MECHANICAL PROPERTIES IS DESCRIBED WHICH INVOLVES THE HEATING OF A POLYMER CONTAINING POLYAMIDE-ACID RECURRING UNITS IN AN ORGANIC POLYMERIZATION SOLVENT, WHICH SOLVENT ALSO CONTAINS AN AMOUNT OF A PHOSPHOROUS COMPOUND IN THE RANGE OF FROM ABOUT .01% BY WEIGHT TO ABOUT 30% BY WEIGHT UNTIL IMIDE RING CLOSURE IS EFFECTED.
