Abstract

Abstract A rotary brush for removing barnacles and other underwater fouling from the hull of a ship. The brush comprises a large wooden disc with nylon bristles and a plurality of resiliently mounted metal blades which have working edges spaced toward the disc from the free ends of the bristles to shear barnacles adjacent their bases without damaging the hull surface.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 134 words
A barnacle removing brush for use on ship hulls and the like comprising a circular base having an obverse surface and a reverse surface, means cooperating with the base and the reverse surface thereof substantially coaxially thereof adapting the base for connection to means for rotating the base about an axis substantially normal to the obverse surface; a plurality of bristles, mounted to the base and extending away from thE base obverse surface to free ends spaced a substantial distance from the obverse surface; at least one metal element having a substantially straight working edge; and means resiliently mounting the metal element to the base obverse surface with the working edge thereof a selected distance toward the base obverse surface from the free ends of the bristles and substantially parallel to the obverse surface.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 134 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the resilient mounting means is configured to allow the working edge of the metal element to deflect along a line substantially parallel to the base obverse surface.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the mounting means is adjustable to vary the distance from the base obverse surface to the working edge of the metal element.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the mounting means includes a rubber element secured to the base and to which the metal element is connected.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 44 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the metal element is disposed with the working edge thereof extending substantially radially of the base, and wherein the metal element has a rounded corner at the end of the working edge adjacent the periphery of the base.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the bristles extend from the base obverse surface over a major portion of the obverse surface circumferentially of the axis about which the base is rotatable.
