Abstract
Abstract There is provided an improvement in the process for the catalytic gas phase oxychlorination of ethylene. The process comprises reacting ethylene, hydrogen chloride and a member of the group of air and oxygen in an iron-type reactor to produce, 1,2-dichloroethane. The improvement of the invention relates to conducting the reaction at a temperature of about 220* C. to about 300* C. and in the presence of a catalyst supported on an inert porous carrier and comprising copper, sodium and magnesium in an atomic ratio of Cu:Na:Mg of 1:0.2 to 0.7:0.3 to 1.5. The novel catalyst compositions are also provided.
