Abstract APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR DETECTING AND COMPUTING THE MAGNITUDE OF CHANGE IN THE RATE OF PENETRATION IN A WELLBORE BEING DRILLED WITH A DRILL STRING AND DRILL BIT WITH DRILLING MUD BEING FLOWED THERETHROUGH. INCLUDED ARE MEANS FOR DETERMINING THE BOTTOMHOLE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN THE HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE OF THE MUD AND THE FORMATION PORE PRESSURE BY REFERENCE TO THE CHANGE IN RATE OF PENETRATION OF THE BIT. THE SYSTEM HAS PARTICULAR USE IN COMPUTING INCIPIENT WELL BLOWOUT CONDITIONS AND PREDICTING THE DEPTH AT WHICH BLOWOUT COULD OCCUR IF CONDITIONS REMAINED UNCHANGED.
