Abstract POUCHES ADVANCED ALONG A HORIZONTAL PATH BY A PACKAGING MACHINE ARE OPENED, FILLED SEALED WHILE BENEATH A HOOD OF COMPARATIVELY SMALL VOLUME TO WHICH NITROGEN IS SUPPLIED TO EXCLUDE THE OUTSIDE ATMOSPHERE FROM THE POUCHES AND THE PRODUCT DEPOSITED THEREIN. THE HOOD ENCLOSES ONLY THE UPPER ENDS OF THE POUCHES TO LEAVE THE LATTER AND VARIOUS MECHANISMS FOR OPERATING ON THE POUCHES ACESSIBLE TO THE OPERATOR OF THE MACHINE.
