Abstract

Abstract The arc tube of an arc discharge device is closely surrounded by, but spaced from, an optically transmissive envelope. The space between the tube and the envelope is filled with a transparent, inert, heat-transfer fluid. Forced cooling of the exterior envelope wall permits the arc tube to be operated at a substantially uniform wall temperature, at a high efficiency and high-wall loading.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 68 words
An arc discharge lamp comprising: an arc tube containing a fill including metallic halide; a transparent envelope surrounding but spaced from said arc tube for at least the arc length portion of said tube, the thickness of said space being substantially uniform for at least the length of said portion; a transparent, inert, heat-transfer fluid within said space; means for forcibly cooling the exterior wall of said envelope.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 68 words
An arc discharge lamp comprising: an arc tube containing a fill including metallic halide; a transparent envelope surrounding but spaced from said arc tube for at least the arc length portion of said tube, the thickness of said space being substantially uniform for at least the length of said portion; a transparent, inert, heat-transfer fluid within said space; means for forcibly cooling the exterior wall of said envelope.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 27 words
The lamp of claim 1 wherein said arc tube is supported within said envelope by substantially rigid lead-in wires sealed into the ends of said arc tube.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
The lamp of claim 1 wherein the ends of said arc tube are joined to said envelope.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 11 words
The lamp of claim 1 wherein said inert fluid is helium.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
The lamp of claim 1 wherein said envelope is enclosed within a transparent container.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
The lamp of claim 5 wherein said container has an inlet and an outlet for a coolant.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 118 words
An arc discharge device comprising: an arc tube having press seals at each end and containing a fill including metallic halide; electrodes disposed within said arc tube and connected to foil connectors embedded within said press seals; a sealed transparent envelope concentrically surrounding said arc tube but spaced therefrom, said envelope extending beyond the ends of said arc tube; press seals at each end of said envelope and foil connectors embedded within said press seals, the foil connectors of said envelope being electrically connected to the foil connectors of said arc tube; a transparent, inert, heat-transfer fluid disposed within the space between said arc tube and said envelope; means for forcibly cooling the exterior wall of said envelope.
Claim 9
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 14 words
The device of claim 7 wherein said envelope is enclosed with a transparent container.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 21 words
The device of claim 7 wherein at least the arc length portion of said envelope is enclosed within a transparent container.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 91 words
An arc discharge device comprising: an arc tube sealed at each end and containing a fill including metallic halide; electrodes disposed within said arc tube and connected to connectors embedded within said sealed ends; a transparent envelope concentrically surrounding, but spaced from, said arc tube for at least the arc length portion thereof, said envelope being sealed to the sealed ends of said arc tube; a transparent, inert, heat-transfer fluid disposed within the space between said arc tube and said envelope; means for forcibly cooling the exterior wall of said envelope.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 91 words
An arc discharge device comprising: an arc tube sealed at each end and containing a fill including metallic halide; electrodes disposed within said arc tube and connected to connectors embedded within said sealed ends; a transparent envelope concentrically surrounding, but spaced from, said arc tube for at least the arc length portion thereof, said envelope being sealed to the sealed ends of said arc tube; a transparent, inert, heat-transfer fluid disposed within the space between said arc tube and said envelope; means for forcibly cooling the exterior wall of said envelope.
