Abstract
Abstract THE PRESENT CUFF IS AN OPEN ENDED FLARING SKIRT WHICH IS PRESSED AGAINST THE TRACHEAL WALL DURING THE POSITIVE PRESSURE PHASE OF MECHANICAL VENTILATION OF THE PATIENT''S LUNGS. THE SEALING PRESSURE IS APPLIED BY THE VENTILATING GAS ITSELF WHEREBY THE PRESSURE OF THE CUFF AGAINST THE TRACHEAL WALL CAN NEVER EXCEED THAT OF THE VENTILATING GAS AND WHEREBY THE CUFF IS RELAXED IN EACH BREATHING CYCLE WHEN THE VENTILATING GAS IS NOT ABOVE ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE. A SLIDABLE SLEEVE SHEATS THE SKIRT FOR INTUBATION AND UNSHEATS THE SKIRT AFTER INTUBATION. THE CUFF IS USED ON ENDOTRACHEAL, NASOTRACHEAL AND TRACHEOSTOMY TUBES.
