Abstract A PLANING MEANS FOR PLANING WOOD, FIBRE OR COMPARABLE MATERIAL INCLUDING A ROTARY DRUM AND A METAL SLEEVE CARRYING TUNGSTEN CARBIDE GRIT. THE SLEEVE IS SHRUNK ON THE DRUM WHIC ACTS AS AN ARBOR TO SUPPORT AND ROTATE THE GRIT CARRYING SLEEVE. ONE OR MORE DRUMS AND GRIT CARRING SLEEVE ASSEMBLIES ARE MOUNTED IN A MACHINE AND ARE ROTATED IN CONTACT WITH WOOD OR EQUIVALENT MATERIAL WHICH IS TO BE PLANED AND IS GIVEN A SMOOTH SURFACE COMPARABLE TO THAT WHICH IS GIVEN BY A CONVENTIONAL ASSEMBLY WITH PLANAR BLADES. SUCH DRUMS MAY BE MOUNTED SOLELY ABOVE THE WORKPIECE OR ABOVE AND BELOW THE WORKPIECE.
