Abstract

Abstract A high production machine of the vertical four-slide type for intermittently advancing strip stock, severing blanks therefrom, forming the same into bearing races and welding end portions thereof together. The machine has a projecting horizontal mandrel with three work stations therealong respectively for preforming, forming and preheating and/or welding. A cutoff anvil, transfer pins, broaching tools, and an expandable mandrel section are provided all with rear motion drive action and a welding mechanism is adapted for both preheat and weld operation adjacent the expandable mandrel section. A bearing race discharge track extends from the welding station to an induction furnace.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 212 words
The combination in a wire or strip-forming machine of a vertical frame, a mandrel supported by the frame and projecting generally horizontally forwardly therefrom, means for successively feeding workpieces transversely of said mandrel to a position adjacent a rear portion thereof, a plurality of reciprocal tools disposed generally in a vertical plane and in a hub-spoke configuration about said mandrel, means for operating said tools to partially form successive workpieces about said mandrel with opposite end portions of each workpiece spaced widely apart, at least one additional tool arranged adjacent said mandrel and in the space between the end portions of partially formed workpieces, means for effecting relative movement and working engagement between said additional tool and said partially formed workpieces in timed relationship with said reciprocal tool operating means, said reciprocal tools being operable after operation thereon by said additional tool further to engage and to form said workpieces about said mandrel whereby to bend end portions of said workpieces into adjacent relationship, a welding station spaced along said mandrel forwardly of said rear portion with a pair of electrodes engageable with workpieces at the station to weld the end portions thereof together, and a transfer device for successively advancing formed workpieces from said rear mandrel portion to said welding station.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 212 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 73 words
The combination in a wire or strip-forming machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said feed means is operable to advance intermittently to said rear mandrel portion leading end sections of an elongated strip of material, and wherein a cutoff means is provided for intermittent operation in timed relationship with said feed means to sever said advanced leading end sections whereby successively to provide substantially linear workpieces at said rear mandrel portion.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 95 words
The combination in a wire or strip-forming machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said transfer device comprises a set of longitudinally reciprocal transfer pins provided with magnetic means and engageable with workpieces to urge the same into engagement with preceding workpieces at said welding station and to eject the latter from said station, said pins being movable through a sufficient stroke to urge the advancing workpieces beyond the welding station and then to withdraw the same to the station under magnetic force whereby to provide a space between said advancing and ejected workpieces.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 53 words
The combination in a wire or strip-forming machine as set forth in claim 3 and including a retaining means operable in timed relationship with said transfer pins to engage each said ejected workpieces and to retain the same in spaced relationship with said welding station against magnetic forces generated during subsequent welding operations.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 59 words
The combination in a wire or strip forming machine as set forth in claim 4 and including a track means associated with an end portion of said mandrel adjacent said welding station and adapted successively to receive workpieces ejected from said station, and including further a post-heat means associated with said track and adapted successively to receive workpieces thereon.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 112 words
The combination in a wire or strip forming machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein preforming and forming work stations are provided along said mandrel with the former arranged to receive workpieces advanced transversely by said feed means and with the latter disposed forwardly thereof, wherein a transfer device is provided for successively advancing partially formed workpieces along the mandrel from said preforming to said forming station, wherein said workpieces are partially formed as aforEsaid at said preforming station and further formed as aforesaid by said reciprocal tools at said forming station, and wherein said additional tool is located to operate upon workpieces after partial forming and prior to further forming.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 55 words
The combination in a wire or strip forming machine as set forth in claim 6 wherein two additional tools are provided adjacent said mandrel and are adapted for respective engagement with end portions of partially formed workpieces and for generally horizontal movement along the mandrel whereby to effect a broaching operation on said end portions.
