Abstract
Abstract Filament-winding apparatus includes rotatable elements mounting supports between which mandrels, on which filament rovings are to be wound, are mounted. A winding head reciprocates along the length of the mandrel located at a winding station. When wound, the elements are rotated to place an unwound mandrel in the winding position. After the filament roving is severed, a wrapcylinder helps to start to wrap or wind the filament roving on the unwound mandrel, while the wound mandrel is removed, moved into a curing oven, and replaced by an unwound mandrel. A plurality of supports mounted adjacent a pair of winding heads operated simultaneously make it possible to wind two mandrels simultaneously.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
343 words
The invention of claim 1 including: a. opposed third and fourth rotatable elements disposed in a spaced-apart relation to said first and second rotatable elements; b. third and fourth chuck mechanisms mounted to said third element; c. third and fourth tail stock mechanisms mounted to said fourth element, said third and fourth chuck and tail stock mechanisms being aligned along respective axes that are generally parallel to said common axis, said third chuck and axially aligned third tail stock mechanism supporting a third mandrel on which filamentary material can be wound; d. means to rotate said third and fourth elements to position said third mandrel in a first winding position; e. means on said carriage for guiding filamentary material onto said third mandrel; f. means to rotate said third mandrel as said carriage reciprocates so that said mandrel is wound helically with filamentary material; g. means for automatically positioning between and coupling a fourth mandrel to said fourth chuck and tail stock mechanisms; h. means to rotate said third and fourth elements, after said third mandrel is wound, from the first winding position to a second position and simultaneously to rotate said fourth mandrel into the first winding position; i. means to bring said filamentary material into surface contact with said fourth mandrel in the first winding position; j. means to sever the filamentary material at a point between said wound third mandrel and said fourth mandrel in the first position thereby creating a loose end relative to said one wound mandrel; k. means to impress the loose end against said wound third mandrel thereby completing the winding thereof; l. means to rotate said unwound fourth mandrel and to reciprocate said carriage whereby said filamentary material is helically wound on said fourth mandrel; m. means to automatically disengage said third wound mandrel from said third chuck and tail stock; n. means to automatically remove said wound third mandrel; and o. means to automatically insert between and couple an unwound mandrel to said chuck and tail stock in place of said third wound mandrel.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
17 words
The invention of claim 1 wherein: a. said means to sever said filamentary material includes shearing apparatus.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
43 words
The invention of claim 1 wherein: a. means to remove said wound first mandrel includes rails sloping away from said apparatus on which said wound mandrel rolls; and including b. means to impregnate said filamentary material before it is wound onto said mandrel.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
58 words
The invention of claim 1 wherein: a. said means to insert an unwound mandrel into said apparatus includes i. rails sloping toward said apparatus on which said unwound mandrel rolls to a position in axial alignment with said chuck and tail stock mechanism; and ii. means to move said chuck and tail stock mechanisms to engage said mandrel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
25 words
The invention of claim 4 including: a. means to elevate one end of said rails whereby said wound mandrel rolls thereon away from said apparatus.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
24 words
The invention of claim 5 including: a. means to elevate one end of said rails whereby said unwound mandrel rolls thereon toward said apparatus.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
37 words
The invention of claim 7 including: a. stop means associated with said rails to engage and stop said mandrel when it is axially aligned with and in position to be engaged by said chuck and tail stock.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
156 words
Apparatus for winding filamentary material onto a mandrel comprising: a. means supporting a pair of first and second mandrels in position for rotation about their respective parallel axes and about a common other parallel axis; b. means to helically wind said filamentary material onto a first one of said mandrels as said mandrel rotates about its own axis until it is wound as desired; c. means to rotate said mandrels about said common axis and to bring said second mandrel into a position to be wound; d. means to partially wind said filamentary material onto said second mandrel; e. means to sever said filamentary material at a point between said second and first mandrels; f. means to automatically remove said wound first mandrel from said apparatus; g. means to automatically replace said first wound mandrel with an unwound third mandrel; and h. means to rotate said second mandrel and to helically wind said filamentary material thereon.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
22 words
The apparatus of claim 9 including: a. means to impregnate said filamentary material with resin before it is wound onto said mandrel.
