Abstract

Abstract Monofilament optical fiber ribbons are formed by winding fiber convolutions one over another throughout a short section of the length of each ribbon, bringing the convolutions into accurately superimposed parallel relationship in said section of the ribbon and cementing across the section to hold same intact for assembling and cementing together corresponding sections of a number of the ribbons as a fiberscope body.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 73 words
Winding apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for moving said second pair of plates comprises a slide beneath said winding surface movable longitudinally of said drum, said winding surface having openings communicating with said slide adjacent said fixed plates through which said second plates are extended, said second plates being fixed to said slide for movement toward and away from said first plates in said openings by actuation of said slide.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 72 words
Winding apparatus according to claim 1 further including fiber-gathering troughs on said winding surface adjacent each side of said pairs of first and second plates, said troughs extending circumferentially of said winding surface in aligned relationship with each other and with said space between said plates so as to receive lengths of said convolutions extending outwardly of said space between said plates and cause said lengths to become randomly intimately bundled together.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
Winding apparatus according to claim 1 including a plurality of said first and second pairs of upstanding fiber-stacking plates disposed along the length of said winding surface for establishing a corresponding plurality of ribbon-winding stations.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 67 words
Winding apparatus according to claim 2 including a plurality of said first and second pairs of upstanding fiber-stacking plates disposed along the length of said winding surface for establishing a corresponding plurality of ribbon-winding stations, all plates of said second pairs thereof being fixed to said slide for automatic simultaneous movement thereof toward and away from said fixed first pairs of plates upon actuation of said slide.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 27 words
Winding apparatus according to claim 1 wherein at least a portion of said winding surface is retractable into said drum for facilitating removal of said ribbons therefrom.
