Abstract

Abstract A channel furnace is used to mix chromium-containing and chromium-free hot metals, producing a converter feed metal of desired temperature and chemical composition. Weighed charges of such feed metal are blown in the converter. This makes practical the production of stainless steel from ore without use of an electric furnace. The time and the electricity saved yield cost savings.
