Abstract

Abstract This patent describes a process for the recovery and purification of sulfur which comprises contacting a sulfurbearing ore with hot perchloroethylene vapor, permitting at least some of said vapor to condense on said ore particles, contacting said ore with liquid perchloroethylene in an extraction zone whereby a substantial portion of the elemental sulfur in said ore is extracted into said perchloroethylene phase, and thereafter recovering said elemental sulfur from said perchloroethylene phase. Preferably the perchloroethylene used in the practice of the process is combined with a perchloroethylene stabilizer which retards the decomposition of the perchloroethylene.
