Abstract

Abstract A handle of the type adapted to prevent overloading of a mechanism with which it is operably associated, wherein a significant length of the handle is designed such that all points lengthwise thereof will simultaneously experience the same bending stress when a mechanism-operating load is applied to the handle, thereby resulting in a noticeably bending deformation of the length of handle before failure of the handle.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 175 words
A handle for preventing overloading of mechanism operated by the handle by undergoing bending deformation when a predetermined mechanism-operating load is applied thereto, said handle comprising: an end portion for mounting said handle on said mechanism; an operating end portion to which mechanism-operating loads are to be applied; and an intermediate portion connecting said end portions, said intermediate portion being elongated in a direction lengthwise of said handle and being characterized by a configuration wherein section modulus progressively decreases in a direction towards said operating end portion such that bending stress produced in said intermediate portion as a result of a mechanism operating load applied to said operating end portion is substantially constant at all points lengthwise thereof, said bending stress in said intermediate portion for all operating loads being greater than in said end portions, whereby when said predetermined operating load is applied to said operating end portion bending deformation of said handle occurs only in said intermediate portion and bending deformation of said intermediate portion occurs substantially simultaneously at all points lengthwise thereof.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 175 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
A handle according to claim 1, wherein said handle portions are of integrally formed construction.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
A handle according to claim 1, wherein said intermediate portion is of I-shaped cross-sectional configuration defined by a pair of spaced flange portions and a connecting web portion.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 29 words
A handle according to claim 3, wherein said section modulus is decreased by decreasing the height of said connecting web portion in a direction towards said operating end portion.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 65 words
A handle according to claim 3, wherein at least said operating end and intermediate portions are of integrally formed construction, said operating end portion is of C-shaped configuration defined by a pair of spaced flange portions and a connecting web portion, and said flange and web portions of said operating end portion being formed continuous with said flange and web portions of said intermediate portion.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 24 words
A handle according to claim 5, wherein said operating end portion is enlarged adjacent opposite ends thereof in a direction transversely of said handle.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 76 words
A handle according to claim 3, wherein said operating end portion is of C-shaped cross-sectional configuration defined by a pair of spaced flange portions and a connecting web portion, said flange and connecting web portions of said operating end portion being connected adjacent one end thereof to said flange and web portions of said intermediate portion and being connected adjacent another end thereof to a flange extending outwardly thereof in a direction transversely of said handle.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 119 words
A handle according to claim 1, wherein said handle portions are in the form of an integral metal casting; said intermediate portion is of I-shaped cross-sectional configuration having upper and lower flange portions and a connecting web portion, said operating end portion is of C-shaped cross-sectional configuration having upper and lower flange portions and a connecTing web portion, said flange and web portions of said operating end portion being joined adjacent one end thereof with said flange and web portions of said intermediate portion, said flange and web portions of said operating end portion being provided adjacent said one end thereof and adjacent another end thereof with flange means extending outwardly thereof in a direction transversely of said handle.
