Abstract

Abstract A cover member for separating the illumination effects of adjacent lamps on an electrical display sign containing lamps arranged in columns and rows also provides cooling of the lamps by natural convection. The cover member includes a front and back cover plate member provided with apertures for the lamps on the sign which protrude into the space between the cover plate members. Horizontally and vertically positioned intervening plate members, and tubes aligned with the lamps may be utilized for providing rigidity to the cover assembly and forming cooling channels for the lamps. An optical link system controls a second display sign remote from a first sign.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 304 words
A cover member for separating the illumination effects of adjacent lamps on an electrical display sign containing lamps arranged in columns and rows and for providing cooling of the lamps by natural convection comprising a front cover plate member, a back cover plate member arranged in parallel spaced-apart relationship to said front member, said front and back members each provided with a plurality of apertures arranged in columns and rows, the apertures equal in number and aligned with the lamps on the sign which protrude into the space between said front and back members, a plurality of intervening plate members positioned in parallel arrangement along the height of the cover member and perpendicular to said front and back members, said front and back members further provided with a plurality of slots arranged in columns aligned with said intervening plate members, said intervening plate members provided with a corresponding plurality of extending members aligned with the slots whereby upon assembly of the cover member the extending members pass through the slots and are thence twisted to provide a rigid cover member assembly, said extending members being retained after assembly of the cover member to function as cooling fins or being ground off to provide smooth surfaces on the front and back cover plate member and a plurality of tubes of length less than the distance between said front and back members, said tubes equal in number and aligned with the lamps on the sign, first ends of said tubes connected to the edges of the apertures in said front member and positioned between said front and back members and perpendicular thereto whereby the tubes separate the illumination effects of adjacent lamps, the spaces between the nonconnected second ends of the tubes and said back member forming channels for cooling the lamps by natural convection therethrough.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 304 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
The cover member set forth in claim 1 and further comprising means connected to the first ends of said tubes for diffusing the light produced by the illuminated lamps therein.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 49 words
The cover member set forth in claim 1 wherein the apertures in said front and back members being circular, the apertures in said front member being slightly larger than the apertures in said back member for ease of replacement of the lamps from the front of the cover member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
The cover member set forth in claim 1 wherein said front and back members, intervening plate members and tubes are fabricated from aluminum to provide good thermal conduction.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 52 words
The cover member set forth in claim 1 wherein said plurality of tubes are each of length approximately three-quarters the distance between said front and back members, said tubes being highly polished to obtain high reflectance of the light emitted by the lamps which protrude into the spaces enclosed by said tubes.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
The cover member set forth in claim 1 wherein the distance between said front and back members is sufficient to obtain lamp protrusion to approximately two-thirds of the distance.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 77 words
The cover member set forth in claim 1 and further comprising a plurality of intervening crossmembers positioned in parallel arrangement along the length of the cover member and perpendicular to said front and back members, said intervening plate members provided with a plurality of slots in a direction perpendicular to the long edges thereof and located such that the intervening plate member slots and intervening crossmembers are disposed for assembly of the cover member in egg-crate fashion.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 40 words
The cover member set forth in claim 7 wherein said intervening crossmembers each comprise a rectangular plate having a plurality of holes punched therethrough of number equal to the number of columns of lamps and aligned with the lamp columns.
