Abstract

Abstract A method for precisely determining the volume of gases, irregular bodies and powdered materials, employing a variable volume hermetically sealed system including a reference compartment within which the material to be measured is placed. A predetermined gas pressure is established within said reference compartment when it is empty and again, the same pressure is established when the compartment contains the said material, a pressure detecting mechanism being employed to register the attainment of the said pressure.

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 238 words
A method for determining the volume of a gas adsorbed by a sample of material due to a change in gas pressure including the following steps: a. introducing into a volumetrically variable system containing a single means for varying the volume a first gas which is not adsorbed by the sample material; b. measuring the volume of the volumetrically variable system at a predetermined pressure unequal to an initial pressure; c. placing the material within the system; d. measuring the volume of the occupied system at the same predetermined pressure; whereby the volume of the material may be determined in accordance with the formula: wherein VX is the volume of the material; P1 is the initial pressure of the system; P2 is the predetermined pressure; and Delta Vs is the change in volume at the predetermined pressure caused by the insertion of the material into the system, Delta Vs being calculated by subtracting the figure representing volume of the occupied system at the predetermined pressure; e. evacuating the system; f. introducing into the system a second gas which is adsorbed by the material; g. measuring the volume of the material in accordance with steps (a) through (d); whereby the volume of the second gas adsorbed by the material may be determined by subtracting the figure representing the volume of the material using the nonadsorbed gas from the figure representing volume of the material using the second adsorbed gas.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method recited in claim 1 wherein step (a) comprises introducing helium into the system.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method Recited in claim 2 wherein the predetermined pressure is greater than atmospheric pressure.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 250 words
A method for determining the volume of a gas desorbed by a sample of material due to a change in gas pressure including the following steps: a. introducing into a volumetrically variable system containing a single means for varying the volume a first gas which is not adsorbed by the sample material; b. measuring the volume of the volumetrically variable system at a predetermined pressure unequal to an initial pressure; c. placing the material within the system; d. measuring the volume of the occupied system at the same predetermined pressure; whereby the volume of the material may be determined in accordance with the formula: wherein Vx is the volume of the material; P1 is the initial pressure of the system; P2 is the predetermined pressure; and Delta Vs is the change in volume at the predetermined pressure caused by the insertion of the material into the system, Delta Vs being calculated by subtracting the figure representing volume of the unoccupied system at the predetermined pressure from the figure representing volume of the occupied system at the predetermined pressure; e. evacuating the system; f. introducing into the system a second gas which is desorbed by the material; g. measuring the volume of the material in accordance with steps (a) through (d); whereby the volume of the second gas desorbed by the material may be determined by subtracting the figure representing volume of the material using the nonadsorbed gas from the figure representing volume of the material using the second desorbed gas.
