Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 196 words
In a machine tool having a drill motor for rotating a drill to be presented to a workpiece, a stationary support head having guide means slidably supporting a carriage for reciprocal movement toward the workpiece in an advancing direction and away from the workpiece in a retraction direction, said carriage supporting the motor, means to sense workpiece resistance encountered by the drill in the course of its work, means to retract the carriage to withdraw the drill from the workpiece when the resistance reaches a predetermined high limit and to return the carriage and drill to the workpiece following retraction, and a pair of bushings constantly supporting the intermediate length of the drill in all positions of the drill, a first one of said bushings being presented by a fixed bushing support projecting outboard of the support head, a slide supported on the support head and having a support presenting the second bushing, and means movable with the carriage to shift the slide with and as an incident to reciprocation of the carriage, said bushings being spaced so that at no time during its advancing stroke is more than one-half the length of the drill unsupported.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 196 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 44 words
A machine tool according to claim 1 in which the second bushing is located between the first bushing and the drill motor, and in which the tip of the drill is presented to the first bushing in the fully retracted position of the drill.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 126 words
A machine tool according to claim 1 in which a fluid-operated cylinder is provided to retract and return the drill at a predetermined high rate of feed, means to advance the drill into the workpiece at a slower rate of feed when the drill is performing work and including an electrically responsive restriction valve accordingly to restrict the supply of fluid furnished to the cylinder, a memory cam supported for movement with the carriage during its advancing movement to constantly record the advanced position of the drill, and means actuated by the memory cam to establish the slower rate of feed when the drill attains its former advanced position during return feed, the last-naMed means including a switch on the motor support carriage for controlling said
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 102 words
A machine tool according to claim 2 in which the guide means slidably supporting the carriage includes a pair of rods, one guide rod having a passage for lubricating oil and the other having a passage for air under pressure, said passages being connected to respective sources of supply for oil and air, said fixed bushing support being provided with passages for respectively feeding lubricant and air under pressure to the tip of the drill, and valve means operative in response to the drill attaining a position of retraction for passing oil and air from the sources of supply to said passages.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 75 words
A machine tool according to claim 4 in which the motor carriage carriage carries a crosshead, said slide which presents the second bushing being joined to a connecting rod, said crosshead having an aperture through which the connecting rod extends, and said connecting rod having a pair of stops on opposite sides of the crosshead whereby the crosshead picks up one stop during advancement and picks up the other stop during retraction of the drill.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 19 words
A machine tool according to claim 5 in which each stop is a nut adjustably threaded on the rod.
