Abstract Temperature sensors in pilot contact and sensor relays are comprised by first order transition materials which provide an abrupt change in at least one of the properties thereof, in particular volume, at predesigned transition temperatures in response to variations in temperature over a given range. Due to the hysteresis characteristics built into the sensors through the use of suitable first order transition materials, the transition temperature values will be different as the temperature increases from a lower to a higher temperature from the transition temperature value as the temperature decreases from a higher to a lower temperature. Preferably a two-part sensor is used employing high and low metallic compound transition temperature materials. An application is a solid state refrigerator control circuit operating with two-point temperature control.
A temperature responsive pilot contact and sensor relay for two-point temperature control comprising: a mechanically operated electrical switch movable by the application of linear force between open and closed positions, a two-part, temperature responsive, physically expandable and contractable actuating member mounted adjacent to said switch to apply linear force thereto by change of one of its dimensions, wherein both parts expand upon a change in temperature in one direction to increase by increments the change in said dimension and both parts contract upon a change of temperature in the other direction to decrease by increments the change in said dimension, each part of said actuating member being comprised of a first order narrow transition temperature metallic compound which exhibits a snap-action abrupt change in volume properties in response to variations in temperature over a given range, and further has thermal hysteresis characteristics so that the transition temperature for increasing temperatures is different from the transition temperature for decreasing temperatures, wherein one part comprises a metallic compound with a high transition temperature and the other part comprises a different metallic compound with a low transition temperature.
