Abstract HERBICIDAL URACILS ARE PREPARED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FOLLOWING EQUATION: CF3-C(-NH2)=C(-R1)-COO-R3 + R2-N(-R2)-C-X -----> 1-R2,2-(X=),4-(CF3-),5-R1,6-(O=)-1,2,3,6-TETRAHYDRO- PYRIMIDINE + R3-OH THE SINGLE STEP REACTION IS CARRIED OUT IN THE PRESENCE OF A SOLVENT AND AN ALKALI METAL HYDRIDE OR ALKALI METAL ALKOXIDE. IN THE ABOVE EQUATION: R1 IS HYDROGEN OR LOWER ALKYL, R2 IS ALKYL, ALKENYL, CYCLOALKYL, PHENYL, BENZYL, OR SPECIFIC MONO AND DISUBSTITUTED DERIVATIVES THEREOF, R3 IS LOWER ALKYL, AND X IS OXYGEN OR SULFUR.
