Abstract XANTHATE TERMINATED POLYESTERS ARE KNOWN INTERMEDIATES IN THE PREPARATION OF MERCAPTAN TERMINATED OLEFIN POLYMERS AND COPOLYMERS. AN IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF THESE INTERMEDIATES INVOLVES THE REACTION OF OLEFIN MONOMER(S) WITH A XANTHOGEN DISULFIDE IN THE PRESENCE OF A PARTICULAR RANGE OF HIGH ENERGY RADIATION. THE DISULFIDE ACTS BOTH AS A SOURCE OF FREE RADICALS AND ALSO AS A POLYMERIZATION MODIFER.
