Abstract
Abstract A METHOD IS DISCLOSED OF COUPLING OPTICAL WAVERGUIDES TOGETHER FOR ENERGY TRANSFER FROM ONE WAVEGUIDE TO ANOTHER. THE WAVEGUIDE ENDS ARE INSERTED INTO A GLASS CAPILLARY TUBE OF REFRACTIVE INDEX LOWER THAN THAT OF THE WAVEGUIDE CLADDING. THE CLOSELY PROXIMATE ENDS OF THE WAVEGUIDES AND THE CAPILLIARY ARE HEATED TO SOFTENING POINT AND THEN PULLED OUT UNTIL THE DIAMETER OF THE SLEEVE APPROXIMATE TO THAT OF A WAVEGUIDE.
