Abstract
Abstract An etcher assembly for etching a master cylinder of a duplicating machine supported between the side plates of the duplicating machine. The etcher assembly includes a rotatably mounted metering roller that is partially disposed within a fountain mounted on the duplicating machine, and an etch applicator roller rotatably supported between two parallel support arms that are adapted to swing about the shaft of the metering roller. A pair of return springs constantly urge the etch applicator roller into contact with the metering roller.

In a duplicating machine having a positively driven rotatable master cylinder for receiving a master sheet, an etcher assembly mounted on said duplicating machine adjacent said master cylinder and comprising: a frame for mounting said etcher assembly on said duplicating machine, an applicator roller mounted for rotation on said frame, said applicator roller being mounted for movement between a first position in contact with said master cylinder and a second position out of contact with said master cylinder, means for selectively moving said applicator roller between said first and second positions, respectively, supply means mounted on said frame and adapted to transmit solution to said applicator roller, said supply means including a fluid reservoir supported by said frame, and a metering roller rotatably mounted upon said frame to receive solution from said fluid reservoir, said applicator roller being mounted to be continuously in contact with said metering roller to receive solution from said metering roller, and drive means connected to drive said applicator roller and operative to drive said applicator roller in respect of said master cylinder while the applicator roller is in said first selective position so that engaging peripheral surfaces of said roller and cylinder, respectively, have a relative speed difference to effect rubbing, said drive means including a drive motor, a power source for supplying power to said drive motor, and a control circuit connected between said power source and said drive motor to control the operation of said drive motor, said control circuit being operative to provide power of a first amplitude to said drive motor when said applicator roller is driven in contact with said metering roller but out of contact with said master cylinder and power of a second amplitude higher than said first amplitude when said applicator roller is driven in contact with said master cylinder, and being further operative to cause said drive means to vary the rotational speed of said applicator roller means to vary the volume of solution applied to said master cylinder.
