Abstract A MATERIAL CONSISTING OF CLOSED CELLS OF POLYSTYRENE WHICH ARE SURROUNDED BY CURED UREA FORMALDEHYDE RESIN IS PRODUCED IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER: SMALL, ENEXPANDED POLYSTYRENE PARTICLES ARE MIXED WITH UREA FORMALDEHYDE RESIN IN A LIQUID MEDIUM; THE UREA FORMALDEHYDE RESIN IS THEN CONVERTED TO A FOAM AND CURED IN THE FORM OF THIS FOAM WITHOUT ANY SUBSTANTIAL EXPANDING OF THE POLYSTYRENE PARTICLES; AFTER THE CURING STEP, THE POLYSTYRENE PARTICLES ARE EXPANDED BY HEATING.
