Abstract THE PRESENT INVENTION COVERS A RELATIVELY SIMPLE METHOD OF DETERMINING THE IONIC CHARACTER OF STARCHES, WOOD PULPS, PAPER MASSES, AND PAPER SURFACES. PARTICULARLY, IT HAS BEEN FOUND THAT THE IONIC CHARACTER OF THESE MATERIALS CAN BE ESTABLISHED BY MIXING THEM WITH SOLUTIONS OF SUITABLE ORGANIC COLORING MATERIALS WHICH THEREBY SHOW CHANGES IN THE RANGE OF VISIBLE LIGHT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE IONIC CHARACTER OF THE MATERIALS.
