Abstract COAL EXTRACTS CONTAINING SUSPENDED SOLIDS ARE HYDROTREATED IN A FIXED-BED DOWNFLOW REACTOR. BED PLUGGING IS MINIMIZED BY USING SUBSTANTIALLY SPHERICAL CATALYST GRANULES HAVING A MINIMUM DIAMETER AT LEAST TEN TIMES AS GREAT AS THE MAXIMUM DIMENSIONS OF THE SUSPENDED SOLIDS AND MAINTAINING A FLOW RATE ABOVE THE MINIMUM AT WHICH OCCLUSION OF THE BED RESULTS, PREFERABLY AT LEAST 1000 POUNDS PER HOUR PER SQUARE FOOT.
