Abstract

Abstract Apparatus for cutting trees. The apparatus includes a support frame. A first arm is pivotally connected to the upper portion of the frame for engaging one side of a tree. A tree-engaging member is fixedly secured to the lower portion of the support frame and includes first and second outwardly extending tree-engaging portions. Means are provided for moving the first arm into spaced alignment with the first tree-engaging portion. Tree-cutting means are connected to the lower portion of the support frame. A second arm is pivotally connected to the support frame intermediate the first arm and the tree-engaging member for engaging the other side of the tree. Means are provided for driving the second arm against the other side of the tree and for applying constant pressure thereto before, during and after cutting the tree so as to maintain the tree under control of the tree-cutting apparatus at all times.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 220 words
Apparatus for cutting trees, said apparatus comprising a support frame, a first arm movably connected to the upper portion of said frame for engaging one side of a tree, a tree engaging member fixedly connected to the lower portion of said support frame and having an outwardly extending tree engaging portion, means for moving said first arm into spaced alignment with said tree engaging portion on one side of said tree, tree cutting means operatively connected to the lower portion of said support frame below said tree engaging member, a second arm movably connected to said support frame intermediate said first arm and said tree engaging member for engaging the other side of said tree, said first and second arms aNd said tree engaging members being the only tree engaging members provided on said apparatus, means for driving said second arm against said other side of said tree, said driving means applying constant pressure to said second arm and thereby said other side of said tree, the distance between said second arm and said first arm and the distance between the tree engaging member and said second arm being spaced sufficiently so as to provide a moment arm which rigidly holds said tree before, during, and after cutting said tree thereby maintaining said tree under constant control of said apparatus.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 220 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein means are operatively connected to said support frame for moving said frame in horizontal and vertical directions.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 70 words
The apparatus of claim 1 including a crane having a boom and a dipper stick, both being pivotally mounted about horizontal axes, and the intermediate portion of said support frame is pivotally mounted at the outer end portion of said dipper stick, and hydraulic drive means mounted on said dipper stick and operatively connected to said support frame are provided for pivoting said support frame in a substantially vertical plane.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 53 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said first arm moving means includes drive means operatively connected between said support frame and said first arm, and a stop member is mounted on said frame for stopping movement of said first arm at a position which is in spaced alignment above said tree engaging portion.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said first arm moving means, said second arm driving means, and said tree cutting means are all operated by hydraulic drive means.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 46 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said tree cutting means comprise cooperating shear blade members pivotally mounted below said tree engaging member on said support frame, said shear blade members including upright support flanges for assisting in confining the cut lower end portion of said tree.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 42 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said tree cutting means includes a pair of opposed, pivotally mounted shear blades, and hydraulic drive means are provided for pivoting said shear blades inwardly towards each other to sever the tree at its base portion.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 36 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said tree cutting means includes first and second supports pivotally mounted at the lower portion of said support frame, and a pair of blade members removably secured to said supports.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 91 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said tree cutting means includes a support assembly mounted at the lower portion of said support frame, first and second blade support members are pivotally secured to the central portion of said support assembly, a single hydraulic drive cylinder is transversely mounted on said support assembly, and link members are pivotally interconnected between said hydraulic drive cylinder means and said blade support members so that as said hydraulic drive cylinder is actuated, said link members pivot said blade supports to and away from each other.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 54 words
The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said hydraulic drive cylinder means comprises a single hydraulic drive cylinder and piston arrangement, one end of said drive cylinder being operatively connected to one set of link members while the other end of said hydraulic drive cylinder is operatively connected to the other set of link members.
