Abstract
Abstract THIS INVENTION RELEATES TO A PROCESS FOR INCREASING THE FLAME RESITANCE OF FLAMMABLE MATERIALS AND TO THE PRODUCT PRODUCED THEREBY. INCREASED FLAME RESISTANCE IS ACHIEVED BY INCORPORATING INTO A FLAMMABLE MATERIAL FROM ABOUT 2 TO ABOUT 95 WEIGHT PERCENT OF HEAT EXPANDABLE GRAPHITE FLAKES. UPON CONTACT WITH HIGH TEMPERATURE, THE EXPANDABLE GRAPHITE CONTAINED IN THE FLAMMABLE MATERIAL EXPANDS TO FORM A TUMID REFRACTORY INSULATING LAYER THEREBY PREVENTING FURTHER COMBUSTION.
