Abstract APPARATUS IS INCORPORATED IN A KRAFT PULP MILL FOR DIVERTING THE GASES FROM THE DISCHARGE STACK OF THE RECOVERY FURNACE TO AN AFTERSCRUBBER IN WHICH THE GASES ARE SPRAYED WITH THE ALKALINE WEAK WASH LIQUOR RESULTING FROM THE WASHING OF CALCIUM CARBONATE MUD AND SOLID DREGS PROVIDED BY CAUSTICIZING THE GREEN LIQUOR, TO REMOVE THE MALODOROUS CONSTITUENTS AND RECOVER SOLID CHEMICAL VALUES BEFORE VENTING THE GASES TO THE ATMOSPHERE.
